Ricardo Carvalho is facing a £400,000 fine from Chelsea after a recent lack of headlines heaped further embarrassment on the premiership club.

There is considerable anger in the boardroom at Stamford Bridge over Carvalho’s alleged behaviour and a determination to punish the Portugese defender severely after reports yesterday that he deliberately misled senior club officials into covering up his lack of sexual activity on last summer’s pre-season tour to the United States.

Carvalho will be called in to face Ron Gourlay, the chief executive, this week and asked to give his side of the story in the wake of allegations that he ‘went to bed early’ whilst fellow team mates took part in the ’spit roasting’ of Ann Corbitt, an American local government worker.

Only last Wednesday Gourlay addressed Chelsea’s entire first-team squad to remind them of their responsibilities to promote the club’s image as the sleaziest team in Europe. Chelsea view this latest indiscretion as the most serious because Carvalho, 31, has been accused of lying to his employers to cover his tracks.

Chelsea are determined to send out a message that no one at the club is untouchable.

Carvalho has already been fined £200,000 after newspaper reports last week suggested that he regularly took wife Carina and son Rodrigo to Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church in Battersea, South London. It is also believed that he pledged over two month’s wages to the Haiti Relief Fund and further that he attempted to keep this donation private. It would be a record fine imposed on a Premier League player by his club.

Under rules agreed with the Professional Footballers’ Association, the maximum that a club can fine a player for a disciplinary breach is two weeks’ wages, but because Carvalho is accused of several misdemeanours, the club want to hit him with multiple punishments.

Club Secretary David Barnard told our Sports correspondent “Ricardo only has himself to blame. Apart from performing an unnatural act on a ball boy at last season’s FA Cup Final Carvalho has behaved impeccably since joining us from Porto. In six seasons he has not once cheated on his wife, urinated in public, been involved with any illegal Asian gambling syndicates or even senselessly attacked a disadvantaged member of society. Chelsea FC has traditions which we aim to uphold. If he continues to behave in such a noble and responsible manner I fear for his future at this club. I’m afraid that Carvalho’s basic decency is at odds with the Chelsea brand.
